Ohio Colleges Reassess ‘Race-Based’ Scholarships

In a move to promote diversity and equality on college campuses, many Ohio colleges are reassessing their scholarship programs that are specifically targeted towards students of certain racial or ethnic backgrounds. These so-called ‘race-based’ scholarships have long been a topic of debate, with some arguing that they are necessary to promote diversity and support underrepresented groups, while others claim they are discriminatory and unfairly exclude students based on their race.

One such institution, Ohio State University, recently announced that it will be phasing out its Hispanic and Asian scholarships in favor of more inclusive merit-based scholarships. The university cited a desire to create a more equitable system that rewards all students based on their academic and extracurricular achievements, rather than their racial or ethnic background.

Similarly, Miami University has also taken steps to reassess its scholarship programs, with plans to eliminate all race-based scholarships by the year 2023. The university has stated that it wants to ensure that all students have an equal opportunity to receive financial assistance, regardless of their race or ethnicity.

While these changes have been met with some criticism from students and alumni who believe that race-based scholarships are an important tool for promoting diversity and inclusion on campus, others have applauded the universities’ efforts to create a more equitable system.

In a statement, Ohio State University President Kristina M. Johnson emphasized the importance of creating a more diverse and inclusive campus environment. “We believe that all students should have equal access to educational opportunities, regardless of their background,” she said. “By phasing out race-based scholarships, we are taking a step towards addressing inequities in our system and promoting a more diverse and inclusive community.”

Moving forward, it will be interesting to see how other Ohio colleges approach their scholarship programs and whether they follow in the footsteps of Ohio State and Miami University in reassessing their ‘race-based’ scholarships. Ultimately, the goal should be to create a system that provides equal opportunities for all students, regardless of their race or ethnicity, and promotes diversity and inclusion on college campuses.
