Arizona Board Chair Steps Aside Amid Governor’s Scrutiny

The chair of the Arizona Board of Education has announced that she will be stepping aside from her position amid increased scrutiny from Governor Doug Ducey.

Kathy Hoffman, who has served as the chair of the board since 2019, made the announcement in a letter to Governor Ducey on Tuesday. In her letter, Hoffman cited the ongoing tension between herself and the governor as the reason for her decision to step down.

Governor Ducey has been critical of Hoffman’s leadership on the board, accusing her of prioritizing politics over the education of Arizona students. He has also expressed concerns about the direction in which the board is moving under her leadership.

Hoffman, a Democrat, has pushed back against the governor’s criticism, arguing that she has worked tirelessly to improve education in Arizona and ensure that all students have access to a quality education. She has also accused the governor of playing politics and attempting to undermine her leadership on the board.

In her letter to Governor Ducey, Hoffman stated that her decision to step aside was not an admission of wrongdoing, but rather an acknowledgment of the strained relationship between herself and the governor. She expressed hope that her decision would allow the board to move forward and focus on the important work of improving education in the state.

Governor Ducey has not yet announced who will replace Hoffman as chair of the board. In the meantime, vice chair Doug Cordy will serve as acting chair.

The resignation of Kathy Hoffman as chair of the Arizona Board of Education comes at a time of increased tension between educators and Governor Doug Ducey. It remains to be seen how this leadership change will impact the future direction of education policy in the state.
