House Republicans Advance Resolution to Block New Title IX Regs

Read Time:1 Minute, 57 Second

House Republicans have recently advanced a resolution to block new Title IX regulations proposed by the Biden administration. The resolution, which was passed by the House Education and Labor Committee along party lines, seeks to prevent the implementation of new rules that would roll back changes made by the previous administration.

Title IX is a federal law that prohibits discrimination on the basis of sex in education programs or activities that receive federal funding. The law has historically been used to address issues of gender-based violence on college campuses, including sexual assault and harassment.

The new regulations proposed by the Biden administration aim to restore protections for survivors of sexual violence and harassment under Title IX. These regulations would make it easier for survivors to come forward with complaints, provide more support and resources for survivors, and hold institutions accountable for addressing complaints.

House Republicans, however, argue that the new regulations would infringe on the rights of the accused and create a system that is biased against them. They claim that the rules proposed by the Biden administration would make it easier for false allegations to be made against individuals, leading to unfair and unjust outcomes.

In a statement, Representative Virginia Foxx, the ranking member of the House Education and Labor Committee, said, “Title IX is intended to protect all students, including the accused. The Biden administration’s new Title IX rule deliberately ignores the rights of the accused and risks creating a system that is unfair and biased.”

Supporters of the new regulations argue that they are necessary to address the shortcomings of the previous administration’s rules, which were criticized for favoring the rights of the accused over the rights of survivors. They argue that the changes proposed by the Biden administration would create a more equitable and just system for all parties involved.

The resolution passed by House Republicans is a significant step in their efforts to block the new Title IX regulations. However, the resolution still needs to be passed by the full House of Representatives and the Senate in order to take effect.

It remains to be seen whether the resolution will ultimately be successful in blocking the new rules proposed by the Biden administration. In the meantime, the debate over Title IX regulations continues to be a contentious and divisive issue in Congress.
