Indiana U Abandons Plan to Spin Off Part of Kinsey Institute

Read Time:1 Minute, 50 Second

Indiana University has announced that it will not go through with its plan to spin off a portion of the renowned Kinsey Institute for Research in Sex, Gender, and Reproduction. The decision to abandon this proposed spin-off comes after facing backlash from faculty, staff, and alumni who were concerned about the potential negative impact it could have on the institute’s mission and reputation.

The Kinsey Institute, founded in 1947 by pioneering sex researcher Alfred Kinsey, has long been a leader in the field of research on human sexuality. The institute is known for its comprehensive library and archival collections, as well as its groundbreaking research on topics ranging from reproductive health to LGBTQ+ issues.

The proposed spin-off would have involved creating a separate non-profit organization to manage the institute’s library and archives, as well as its outreach and education programs. While the university initially argued that this move would help to secure the institute’s long-term financial stability, critics raised concerns that it could undermine the institute’s independence and compromise its ability to carry out its research and advocacy work.

In response to the outcry, Indiana University has decided to keep the Kinsey Institute as an integral part of the university and to work towards finding other ways to support its work. In a statement, the university acknowledged the concerns raised by the Kinsey Institute community and emphasized its commitment to preserving the institute’s legacy and advancing its important research.

This decision to abandon the spin-off plan is a victory for the Kinsey Institute and for the field of sex research more broadly. By keeping the institute within the university, its researchers and staff will be better positioned to continue their important work and to build on the institute’s legacy of promoting a better understanding of human sexuality.

Moving forward, Indiana University will need to work closely with the Kinsey Institute community to ensure that the institute has the resources and support it needs to flourish. By continuing to invest in the institute’s research and educational programs, the university can help to ensure that the Kinsey Institute remains a vital source of knowledge and advocacy on issues related to sex, gender, and reproduction.
