Morehouse Students, Faculty Object to Biden as Commencement Speaker

Read Time:1 Minute, 40 Second

Morehouse College, a historically black college located in Atlanta, Georgia, is known for its long-standing tradition of empowering and uplifting the African American community. However, a recent decision to invite President Joe Biden as the commencement speaker has sparked controversy among students and faculty.

Many on campus are voicing their disapproval of the choice, citing Biden’s track record on issues affecting the black community as the primary reason for their objection. Some students and faculty members argue that Biden’s support of policies such as the 1994 crime bill, which has disproportionately impacted people of color, and his handling of various social justice issues during his time in office, do not align with Morehouse’s values of social justice and equality.

In a statement released by the Morehouse Student Government Association, they expressed their disappointment in the decision to invite Biden, saying, “We believe that inviting President Biden as the commencement speaker is not in line with the values and morals of Morehouse College. We believe that his actions and policies have harmed the communities that we are a part of, and we cannot in good conscience celebrate his leadership at our graduation.”

Additionally, faculty members have also spoken out against the decision, with some expressing concern that having Biden as the commencement speaker could send the wrong message to students about the college’s commitment to advocating for social justice and equality.

Despite the backlash, Morehouse College President David A. Thomas has defended the decision to invite Biden, stating that the college values diversity of thought and believes that having the President as a speaker will provide students with a unique opportunity to engage in important conversations about social and political issues.

As the controversy continues to unfold, it remains to be seen how the Morehouse community will ultimately respond to Biden’s upcoming commencement address. However, one thing is clear: the debate surrounding his invitation has brought to light important conversations about the role of leadership in advancing social justice and equality in our society.
