To help demystify the experience of being new on the job, we sat down with John Andrick, a recent hire at St. John’s University and College of Saint Benedict, to ask him about his first few weeks on the job and the lessons he’s learned so far.
Q: Hi John, thanks for taking the time to chat with us today. Can you tell us a bit about your new role at St. John’s University and College of Saint Benedict?
A: Of course! I recently joined the university as a communications specialist in the marketing and communications department. In this role, I’ll be responsible for helping to promote the university and college through various channels, including social media, press releases, and other marketing materials.
Q: That sounds like an exciting role! What are some of the challenges you’ve faced during your first few weeks on the job?
A: One of the biggest challenges has been getting up to speed on all of the university’s programs and initiatives. There’s a lot of information to absorb, and I want to make sure I have a good understanding of the university’s mission and values before I start promoting them to the public.
Q: How have you been able to overcome this challenge?
A: I’ve been fortunate to have a great team of colleagues who have been very supportive and patient with me as I’ve been getting up to speed. They’ve been willing to answer all of my questions and help me navigate the vast amount of information that I need to learn in order to be successful in my role.
Q: That’s great to hear. What advice do you have for others who are starting a new job?
A: I would say don’t be afraid to ask questions and seek help when you need it. It’s better to ask for clarification than to make assumptions and potentially make a mistake. Also, take the time to get to know your colleagues and build relationships with them. It’s important to have a support system in place as you navigate the challenges of a new job.
Q: And finally, what are you looking forward to as you continue to settle into your new role?
A: I’m really excited to dive deeper into the university’s marketing strategy and help promote all of the amazing things that St. John’s University and College of Saint Benedict have to offer. I can’t wait to see the impact that my work will have on the university and its community.
