We sat down with Leslie to discuss her new position and her goals for the university.

Q: Welcome to the University of Montana, Leslie! Can you tell us a little bit about your background in HR and what drew you to this position?

A: Thank you! I have over 15 years of experience in human resources, working in various industries ranging from healthcare to finance. I have always been drawn to roles that allow me to support and develop employees, and when I saw the opportunity at UM, I knew it was the perfect fit for me. The university has a strong reputation for its commitment to both academic excellence and employee satisfaction, and I am excited to be a part of that.

Q: What are some of your initial observations about the HR department at UM and what changes do you hope to implement?

A: One thing that has stood out to me is the dedication and passion of the HR team here at UM. They are truly committed to supporting employees and helping them succeed. I hope to build on that foundation by implementing new training and development programs, improving communication between departments, and creating opportunities for career advancement. I also want to focus on diversity and inclusion initiatives to ensure that all employees feel valued and respected.

Q: What are some of the challenges you anticipate facing in your new role, and how do you plan to overcome them?

A: One of the biggest challenges I anticipate is navigating the unique dynamics of a university environment. Universities can be complex organizations with diverse stakeholders and competing priorities. I plan to overcome this challenge by building strong relationships across campus, listening to feedback from employees at all levels, and staying flexible in my approach. I believe that open communication and transparency are key to overcoming any challenges that may arise.

Q: What are your long-term goals for the HR department at UM, and how do you plan to achieve them?

A: My long-term goal is to create a culture of excellence and inclusivity within the HR department and across the university as a whole. I want UM to be known for its commitment to employee development, diversity, and innovation. To achieve this, I plan to work closely with department heads, faculty, and staff to identify opportunities for improvement, implement best practices in HR, and provide resources and support to help employees thrive. Ultimately, I want UM to be a place where employees are proud to work and where they can grow and succeed in their careers.

Leslie’s enthusiasm and dedication to fostering a positive work environment are sure to make a lasting impact at the University of Montana. With her experience and vision, she is well-equipped to lead the HR department towards a brighter future. We look forward to seeing the positive changes she will bring to the campus in the coming months and years.
