Reflecting on a ‘Tumultuous’ Year for Higher Ed

Read Time:2 Minute, 11 Second

As we approach the end of the year, it’s a good time to reflect on the challenges and successes that higher education has experienced over the past twelve months. With the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, social unrest, and political turmoil, it’s safe to say that 2021 has been a tumultuous year for higher ed.

One of the biggest challenges that higher education faced this year was the shift to remote learning. As universities and colleges across the country closed their campuses in response to the pandemic, educators had to quickly adapt to online teaching and learning. This presented numerous challenges, from technological issues to issues of access and equity. Many students struggled with the transition to remote learning, with some facing difficulties accessing the necessary technology and resources to participate in online classes.

In addition to the shift to remote learning, higher education also grappled with social unrest and political turmoil in 2021. The murder of George Floyd and the subsequent protests for racial justice sparked important conversations about diversity, equity, and inclusion on college campuses. Many institutions were forced to reckon with their own histories of racism and discrimination, and to take action to address systemic inequities within their institutions.

On top of these challenges, higher education also faced financial struggles in 2021. As the pandemic forced many universities and colleges to cancel in-person classes and events, institutions saw declines in enrollment and revenue. This led to budget cuts, layoffs, and program closures at many institutions, further exacerbating the challenges that higher education was already facing.

Despite these challenges, there were also moments of success and resilience in higher education in 2021. Many institutions found creative ways to support students and ensure that they continued to receive a quality education during the pandemic. Faculty members and staff worked tirelessly to adapt to remote teaching and learning, and to support students through the challenges of the past year. And many institutions made important strides in advancing diversity, equity, and inclusion on their campuses, with some launching new initiatives and programs to promote a more inclusive and welcoming environment for all students.

As we look ahead to the new year, it’s important to reflect on the lessons learned from the challenges of 2021. Higher education has shown its ability to adapt and innovate in the face of adversity, and there is much that we can build upon as we move forward. By continuing to prioritize the needs of students, support faculty and staff, and address issues of equity and inclusion, we can create a more resilient and inclusive higher education system for the future.
