The University of Maryland, Baltimore County (UMBC) has come under scrutiny after an investigation found that the school failed to properly address allegations of harassment and abuse within its athletic program.

The U.S. Department of Education’s Office for Civil Rights conducted the investigation after receiving complaints from several UMBC athletes who claimed they had been subjected to harassment and abuse by their coaches and teammates. The investigation found that the university did not take appropriate action to stop the alleged harassment and hold those responsible accountable.

According to the findings, UMBC failed to provide a safe and equitable environment for its athletes, as required by Title IX, the federal law that prohibits sex-based discrimination in education programs that receive federal funding. The university also reportedly did not adequately train its coaches and staff on how to respond to complaints of harassment and abuse.

UMBC has since been ordered to revise its policies and procedures for handling complaints of harassment and abuse, as well as provide training to all staff members on Title IX requirements. The university must also appoint a Title IX coordinator to oversee compliance with the law and ensure that allegations of harassment and abuse are promptly and thoroughly investigated.

In a statement, UMBC acknowledged the findings of the investigation and said it is committed to creating a safe and respectful environment for all students, including athletes. The university has promised to take steps to address the issues raised in the report and prevent similar incidents from occurring in the future.

This case serves as a reminder of the importance of universities and athletic programs taking allegations of harassment and abuse seriously and responding to them promptly and effectively. Athletes should never have to endure mistreatment or discrimination, and it is imperative that schools take proactive measures to prevent and address such behavior.

Moving forward, UMBC must prioritize the safety and well-being of its athletes and ensure that all members of the university community are treated with respect and dignity. By taking concrete steps to address the findings of the investigation, UMBC can work towards creating a more inclusive and supportive environment for all students.
