University of Phoenix Fined for ‘Aggressive’ Military Recruitment Tactics

Read Time:2 Minute, 4 Second

The University of Phoenix has recently come under scrutiny for its aggressive military recruitment tactics, resulting in a hefty fine from the Federal Trade Commission (FTC). The for-profit university has been accused of specifically targeting military personnel and veterans in a predatory manner, exploiting their GI Bill benefits and other forms of military education assistance.

The FTC launched an investigation into the University of Phoenix after receiving numerous complaints from service members and veterans about misleading and aggressive recruitment practices. The findings revealed that the university had been engaging in deceptive advertising, using false statements and inflated job placement statistics to lure in military students.

In addition to these misleading tactics, the University of Phoenix was also found to have violated the FTC’s Telemarketing Sales Rule by placing numerous unsolicited calls to military members in an attempt to pressure them into enrolling in their programs. This aggressive approach led to the commission imposing a $191 million fine on the university, one of the largest penalties ever issued by the FTC.

The University of Phoenix has since agreed to pay the fine and to make changes to its recruitment practices in order to comply with the law. This includes providing clear and accurate information about its programs, job placement rates, and financial aid options to prospective students, as well as offering a debt relief program for military students who were victims of deceptive recruiting tactics.

The university has also been ordered to cease making false claims about its connections to major companies and organizations, as well as its ability to secure employment for its graduates. This is a significant victory for the FTC and for the military community, as it sends a strong message to other for-profit institutions that such predatory practices will not be tolerated.

It is important for military members and veterans to be aware of the tactics used by for-profit universities in recruiting students, and to carefully research their options before enrolling in any program. Organizations like the FTC and the Department of Veterans Affairs offer resources and information to help service members make informed decisions about their education and training options.

The fine imposed on the University of Phoenix serves as a reminder to all educational institutions that deceptive recruitment practices will not go unpunished. It is crucial that service members and veterans are protected from predatory tactics and are given the accurate information they need to make informed choices about their future education and career paths.
