The University of Texas at Austin has announced the closure of its former Division of Diversity and Community Engagement (DDCE), which was originally established in 2006 with the goal of promoting diversity, equity, and inclusion on campus.

The decision to shut down the former DEI division comes after months of deliberation and reflection on the university’s approach to diversity and inclusion efforts. In an official statement, UT Austin President Jay Hartzell explained that the university is moving towards a more integrated and holistic approach to fostering an inclusive campus environment.

According to Hartzell, the university’s commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion remains unchanged, and the decision to close the former DEI division is part of a broader effort to streamline and consolidate the university’s various diversity initiatives. Moving forward, UT Austin will be implementing new structures and processes to ensure that DEI efforts are effectively integrated into all areas of the university.

The closure of the former DEI division has sparked mixed reactions within the UT Austin community. Some students and faculty members have expressed concerns about the university’s commitment to diversity and inclusion, while others have welcomed the decision as a step towards a more effective and cohesive approach to DEI efforts.

Despite the closure of the former DEI division, UT Austin remains dedicated to promoting diversity, equity, and inclusion on campus. The university will continue to support a variety of initiatives and programs aimed at fostering an inclusive campus environment, including the Presidential Diversity Awards, the Multicultural Engagement Center, and various student-led diversity organizations.

As UT Austin moves forward with its new approach to DEI efforts, it is clear that the university remains committed to creating a campus community that celebrates diversity and values inclusivity. By taking a more integrated and holistic approach to diversity and inclusion, UT Austin hopes to create a more welcoming and inclusive environment for all members of the university community.
